①エドウィン英会話のレッスンの特徴を教えてください。
Could you tell me about the features of Edwin English school.

We’ve been operating in Koriyama for about 35 years, so I think we are well-established in this area, and the other teachers and I together have a long experience of teaching in Japan. So I think we understand the problems that Japanese students have, and how to overcome those problems. Also, we are a friendly community-type school. We like to create an at home atmosphere, so the students can relax. Also, I believe our prices are reasonable. We provide an opportunity to take extra lessons at low cost, and also we have introductory courses, so it is easy to start taking lessons at your level at a reasonable price.

郡山で約35年となり、地元に定着した英会話スクールだと思います。私も他の先生たちも、日本での指導経験が豊富なので、日本人が英語を上達するために必要な課題をよく理解しています。また、フレンドリーな雰囲気のスクールなので、リラックスしてレッスンを受けられます。なお、レッスン料金は手ごろだと思っています。低料金での体験プランや追加授業プランがあり、自分のレベルに合ったレッスンをリーズナブルに受けられます。

②生徒さんは全体で何名くらいいらっしゃいますか。
How many students are coming to this school?

At the moment, a little over 200 students are coming. Some students come twice a week.

現在、200人以上の生徒さんが通っています。中には週に２回通う方もいます。

③生徒さんの年齢層はどのくらいですか。
Could you tell me about the students’ age groups in Edwin English school?

We have classes starting from 3 years old; kindergarten classes, elementary school, junior high school, and then high school and adult classes. Of course, there is no maximum age; the oldest is around 85 years old.

当スクールには3歳からの幼稚園クラスや小学生、中学生、高校生クラス、そして大人クラスがあります。年齢制限の上限はなく、最年長では85歳ぐらいの生徒さんもいらっしゃいます。

④英語が上達するために必要なことは何ですか？
What things are important in order to improve English?

For children, it’s good to start at a young age to become accustomed to English. The first point is that they become used to conversing and communicating in a foreign language. It’s not strange for them, and if they start learning at a young age, then their ears become accustomed to listening to natural English. At a young age, it’s easier for them to catch English. For adults, of course, practicing as much as possible by speaking, listening, and reading is of course important. It is also important to learn to think in an English style. A lot of Japanese students think in Japanese and then change into English, but the word order is then the same as the Japanese word order, which is difficult for the listener to understand. For example, Japanese speakers tend to start with the time (“Kinou wa”, “Kyou wa”, and so on), but in English, the time comes last. Also, when we want to ask a question, we use a question word first (where, why, how, and so on), so it’s necessary to think in an English style. Learning to think in an English style is a big step in improving English, so when I teach adults, my big point is to get them away from a Japanese style of thinking, and into an English style of thinking.

子供の場合は、小さい頃から英語での会話やコミュニケーションを始めることで、自然な英語にも耳が慣れやすく、英語を習得しやすくなります。

大人の場合はスピーキング、リスニング、リーディングを可能な限り練習するのはもちろん、英語の語順をマスターすることが大事です。日本語は「昨日は」「今日は」など時間から始まりますが、英語では時間は最後に言います。また、質問では英語はWhere, Why, Howなどクエスチョンワードが前に来ます。この英語スタイルを学ぶことが上達のための大きなステップになります。なのでレッスンでは日本語スタイルから英語スタイルに切り替えてもらうことを大きなポイントとしています。

⑤日常生活でどのように練習できますか？
How can I practice in daily life？

What some students do is just to imagine various situations, and think how to say that in English. Then if they have trouble, they will ask me or look it up somewhere. Of course, listening is important too. If you have chance, listen to a drama, or some people like to listen to music. A lot of people listen to YouTube or podcasts recently. Also, come to school and do your homework !

ある生徒さんは様々なシチュエーションを英語でどのように言うかを考えて、練習しています。そして、分からない時は私に聞いたり、自分で調べたりしています。リスニングも重要なので、ドラマや音楽を聞くのもいい練習だと思います。最近ではYouTubeやポッドキャストを活用してる人も多いです。もちろん英会話スクールに来ることと宿題をするのも大切です！

⑥講師として嬉しいのはどんな時ですか？
When are you happy as a teacher?

When I see that students are interested in learning, and when I see students are improving. Those are the happiest times.

英語を学ぶことに興味を持って取り組んでいる生徒さんを見たり、英語が上達したと感じた時はとても嬉しいですね。
